General Interview Questions

  1. Tell me about yourself?
    • I finished Bachelor at RMIT as one of top students and so proceeded to do Honours in Artificial Intelligence at RMIT, which I graduated First Class Honours.
    • Soon after graduation, I joined JMango as a Java developer, working on JMango script on Nokia J2ME devices and then I wrote the Visual Editor in Adobe Flex, JMango interpreter on Windows Mobile 5 & 6 platform, PSBank server side component in JSP & Java on Spring framework.
    • I handled iOS JMango platform since mid 2011, working on SilverTop, MobilePayment, RoyMorgan, Motorpass, Shomi apps, and especially the JMango iOS Ecommerce platform. I moved to Catch and was responsible for 3 iOS apps: Catch, Mumgo & WestAvenue.
  2. What do you do in your free time?
    • On weekdays, I come home to my wife and we cook dinner together. In the evenings I spend time with my family or learning. I read technical blogs, watch technical videos and summarise them in my blog.
    • On weekend I usually take my family out or play some table tennis. I am a Christian so our family goes to church on sunday morning.
  3. As you look back on your career, what it is a specific difficult situation you’ve been faced with that stands out in your mind? Describe the challenge and how you dealt with it in detail. What do you feel you handled particularly well? What might you do differently if you had the opportunity to do it over again?
    • Tough period: full-time study & working. Tough work-situation: organised an iOS team in Philippine. Stabilised a demoralised team after some people left. Working overnight for SilverTop. Working over weekend for other projects.
  4. What is the biggest mistake you think you ever made in your career?
    • I have been quite careful and have not made a big mistake.
  5. What do you enjoy the most about software development? What do you enjoy the least?
    • I enjoy most: learning new languages
    • I enjoy least: writing unit test
  6. If you could paint the ideal position for yourself, what would it be? What would it look like in terms of your role and responsibilities, size and type of company, the work environment and so on?
    • Product Development Manager: I am good in optimization, including utilizing resources. I can also envision myself to be a System Architect.
  7. What are your greatest strengths? What would we gain by hiring you?
    • A self-learner, a team-player, a dedicated developer and a caring team leader, an efficient project manager.
  8. None of us are perfect. What are some aspects of your personality that you’re working on improving?
    • Sometimes I can be pessimistic and even skeptical.
  9. If I called your current boss and asked him about you, what would he or she tell me?
    • Responsible, dedicated and capable.
  10. What should we be concerned about in hiring you?
    • I believe you are very professional and nice people, so there is no concern at all.
  11. Describe the work environment or culture in which you are most productive and happy.
    • A positive, professional, friendly and active environment.
  12. Provide an example of a time when you went out of your way and jumped through hoops to delight a customer?

  14. What is the single most important factor that must be present in your work environment for you to be successfully and happily employed? Now that you have answered that question, what were two others that you debated about before giving the response that you chose?

  16. Do you have a best friend at work? How do you feel about becoming friends with your coworkers? Is this a wise practice?

  27. What are the characteristics exhibited by the best boss you have ever had – or wished that you have had?
  28. Tell us about a decision that you made that was made based primarily on customer needs and input.
  29. When we call your previous employer or references what are they likely to tell us in regards to your dependability/attendance?
  30. Tell me about a time when you demonstrated your trustworthiness or integrity in school or at work.
  31. Tell me about a time when you were working hard to complete a task and you were asked to leave that task before completing it and start a different job.

  34. Give me a specific occasion on which you followed a policy with which you did not agree.
  35. Give me an example of a time when you were able to successfully communicate with another person even when that individual may not have personally liked you (or vice versa).

  37. In what kind of a work environment do you do your best work?
  38. The potential employee then demonstrates the ability to sort phones and identify cosmetic problems on an actual box of phones.

  • When describing past approaches, problem solving, achievements, endeavours, and projects, in response to other interview questions, includes forming a team or teamwork solutions as viable options.
